What is SUS?

In order to provide an equitable service in the care, promotion and prevention health for the general population, the Health System that is strengthened through community actions for the assistance of all Brazilians was created. For over two decades, it can be said that the Health System changed (for the better) the Brazilian health.

Recognized by the Brazilian Constitution in 1988, due to emphasize the right of access to full health without discrimination, from pregnancy and throughout life, bringing citizenship to the Brazilian people and as a state duty.

This occurred because of a democratization of the country, as previously did not consider access to health for all citizens. They were classified into three groups: those who could afford private services; the formal workers were entitled to public health because they are insured by social security; and there were those who did not have any right to health.

In order to change this perspective, aimed comprehensiveness, universality and equity of health care, not merely the absence of disease but a life with quality.

Currently it characterized as a model built collectively, with responsibility in the three spheres of government and with the participation of various sectors of society represented by the municipal health councils, state and national.
